Whether positive or negative (or dead silence, which is not great either), understanding how your company is perceived by others is an important part of knowing how to shape your product or service to satisfy them.

Take it away Mhairi….

One of the best ways to explore whether social media is right for your company is to listen. Social media listening means using these tools to listen for mentions of your product or service, company, competitors and industry. By doing so you will get a great feel for what is being said about your product or industry, how people communicate, what is appropriate – and you might even learn a thing or two.

Here are some great tools you can use:

1. General:

Donna’s post on How to read a podcast script and not sound like you’re reading caught my eye. For anyone who is considering doing a podcast, my best advice is to be prepared. It’s number one on Donna’s list too. Often being prepared means determining what you’re going to say ahead of time, which then leads to writing out your script (or answers if it’s an interview,) which then means you might be inclined to read it. Making it sound natural can be a real challenge. Take heart. Read Donna’s helpful post and you’ll soon be sounding like a podcasting pro!

I had worked on podcasts for clients before, but never imagined myself actually being in one. Mhairi assured me that it was very casual and relaxed – so I agreed to do it.

She was right. I really did have fun! It felt more like I was having coffee with a good friend, rather than being interviewed. Of course, it helps that Mhairi is a skilled interviewer, and her beautiful Scottish accent is absolutely delightful. I hope you find my first – and definitely not my last – podcast about SEO writing to be helpful in developing your own web content for both the search engines and your site visitors.
